Tarefas: Sources of Energy

You probably have already heart people saying that are feeling “energyless” or tired because they are hungry. Exactly! When we eat, the food undergoes and electrochemical transformation in our body to be converted into energy.

Energy conversion also happens inside vehicles: the chemical energy from the fuel makes the engine works, generating kinetic energy, which moves the vehicle and is converted into thermal energy in the engine and wheels. The electrical energy stored in the battery, in its turn, is transformed into sound energy (the horn, the sound system, etc) or light energy (the headlight, light panel etc).

1. Read the text above and answer the questions

a) Indicate the types of energy that are mentioned in the text.

2. Read the dialogue below and answer the questions.

John: Wow, Paulo, I think this fan is not working properly.

Paul: Why do you say so?

John: I’m still hot.

Paul: I think it’s the wind that doesn’t have much energy today.

John:What? And does the wind, by any chance, conduct energy?

Paul: Yes… Well, I don’t know. Maybe it is the movement speed of the fan’s blades that is reducing very time we turn on the fan.

John: What do you mean?

a) John and Paul didn’t know how to explain what happened, but they were able to identify a  phenomenon in wich energy is involved. Do you know what phenomenon is that?

3.Read the definition and relate with the situation presented in the dialogue above.

Kinetic Energy: is the energy an object has because of its motion. If we want to accelerate an object, then we must apply a force. Applying a force requires us to do work. After work has been done, energy has been transferred to the object will be             moving with a new constant speed.. The energy transferred is known as kinetic energy, and it depends on the mass and speed achieved.

a) What does kinetic energy depend on?

4.What sources of energy you know?

5. Transcribe from one of the texts, sentences that prove the presence of the passive voice.

6.Match the words of column A to the corresponding definition in columnB.

a) Solar Energy                        (    ) is the capacity a physical system to perform work.  Exists in several                                                    forms such as heat, Kinetic or mechanical, light, potential energy, electrical,                                                or other forms. Ability to do work, andcouldbe classified as Renewable and                                                 Non-renewable.

b) Renewable Energy              (     )is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly such                                                 as solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geothermal resources, and                                                        biofuels and hydrogen.

c) Energy                                 (    )is the primary source of energy. Sunlight is a clean, renewable source                                                 of energy. It is a  . sustainableresource, meaning   it doesn’t run out, but can                                                 be maintainedbecause the sunshines almost every day.

d) Wave Energy                     (   )is the natural movement of air across the land or sea. The wind when                                                    used to turn the blades of a mill turns the shaft to which they are attached. This                                             movement of shaft through a pump or generator produces electricity.

e) Wind Energy                     (    )is heat stored in earth crust and being used for electric generation and             also for direct heat application.

f) Geothermal energy             (  ) is generated by the movement of a device either floating on the surface of           the ocean or moored to the ocean floor. Many different techniques for                       converting in electric power have beenstudied.
